Heartworm 4DX Test

Only one in-house test lets you screen for heartworm and three tick-borne diseases at once, including canine anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and lyme disease.
Since the most common clinical signs are hidden, all dogs should be screened.

Dogs exposed to any of these diseases are at risk of becoming sick. Unfortunately, pet owners aren't aware of infection until their dogs become seriously ill. Testing helps you detect exposure and infection, and reinforces the importance of tick control. It also allows us to treat your dog before the infection becomes active.

Meet Kazi, our clinic's Mascot!

In July of 2006 we passed our AAHA Certification inspection again so we still meet the high standards of the AAHA. Then we received some bad news. Our mascot of seven years, Sniper, the greyhound, was diagnosed with bone cancer in her left rear leg. We didn't expect her to live more than a couple of months, and unfortunately, she passed away in August of 2006 as she stopped eating and could no longer get up without assistance. It was a very sad day at MPCC, and Sniper will be greatly missed.

Our new mascot, above, is Kazi. Although very shy, she has lots of potential. She is a golden brindle, (Sniper was a silver brindle) with a black face. Please give Kazi a warm hello when you see her wandering around Maplewood Pet Care Clinic!

The American Heartworm Society released new guidelines in June of 2005 recommending annual testing of all dogs and cats for heartworm disease and year round use of heartworm preventives. The revisions are based on recent research from several universities and pharmaceutical companies indicating that there have been some product failures reported and that heartworms may be developing resistance to some products. There have also been some lung problems reported in people from heartworm infection. Reducing the incidence of heartworm in pets also reduces the risk to people.

Comfort Room

Another special service that Maplewood Pet Care Clinic offers our clients is our "Comfort Room". When it's time to say goodbye to your trusted friend, we have a private room just off the front entrance where we perform our euthanasia appointments. Peacefully decorated and furnished for the comfort of your pet, it offers complete privacy, totally separate from the rest of the clinic. We administer heavy tranquilizers to relieve anxiety and pain in your pet prior to the final injection.

Sympathy literature to help you and your children cope with the loss of your pet is included as part of your appointment, as well as a painted clay "paw print" memorial of your pet. There is also a large selection of urns and boxes in which to have your pet's ashes stored.

At Maplewood Pet Care Clinic, we strive to make this sad day as peaceful and comfortable as possible for you and your pet.

We have upgraded our boarding facility and have added some special services to make your pet feel more at ease and comfortable during their stay with us. While all dogs still recieve regular exercise in our cemented fenced runs, they can also have some TLC along with that exercise! We've recently fenced in our grassy back yard where dogs will enjoy supervised play time. We've also added some VIP Services that your pet will love!

What's New at Maplewood Pet Care Clinic

New! Digital Dental Imaging Unit

Our new digital dental x-ray unit allows us to take dental radiographs of your pet's teeth just like at your own dentist's office. 70-85% of pets 2 years and older have some degree of periodontal disease.
X-rays aid us in detecting abscessed or otherwise diseased teeth and extract them or treat them before they cause a serious problem for your pet.

Maplewood Pet Care Center is now offering low cost preventative dental services.

To try and encourage clients to maintain their pet’s oral health we are offering low cost dental procedures. These procedures are preformed under general anesthesia and are an option for all cats and dogs with minor tartar and/or periodontal disease. The dental exam will include the following services:

  • An oral exam and probing of the teeth and gums.
  • Dental Prophy and polish of the teeth and gums
  • An Oravet treatment on the teeth and gums after cleaning
  • Oral antibiotics to go home with the patient, if needed

Oral health is vital to your pets overall health. By maintaining tartar control and performing dental cleanings while tartar is minimal, we can help to prevent tooth extractions, abscesses, and other major dental issues that make dental cleanings more expensive and harder on your pet. Prices range from $225 - 250.00, depending on the size of your dog.

New Blood Pressure Machine!

Taking your pet's blood pressure is easier and calmer than ever with our new blood pressure machine. The machine's digital technology provides accurate and quick readings!

New! Slentrol is Available Now!

Besides diet and exercise, there is Slentrol, a new prescription medication that aids in the success of your dog's weight loss program. Slentrol is a FDA approved liquid medication given orally to your dog once or twice daily. It works by blocking some of the fat that your dog eats along with sending messages to your dog's brain telling him/her that they are full.

Studies have shown up to a 20% decrease in your dog's overall weight loss during the course of the entire program, which generally lasts about a year. Healthy weight loss can reduce your dog's risk for arthritis, heart, liver, and kidney disease, and drastically improve the overall health and attitude of your pet! Please call for details.

Virulent Systemic Calicivirus (Calici-VS) is a relatively new, more deadly strain of the traditional feline calici virus which we have been vaccinating against for years. Within just a few days of exposure this virus can cause severe upper respiratory signs as well as systemic signs of illness and often death.

Maplewood Pet Care Clinic Has Updated All Lab Equipment!

New changes were made in our lab in October of 2006. Maplewood Pet Care Clinic has updated all of the lab equipment to the newest, fastest and most accurate lab equipment available. Our goal is to provide lab results as quickly as possible and as accurately as possible. Most of our equipment is manufactured by Heska - one of the leading suppliers of veterinary diagnostic equipment.

Some of the tests we currently run are Complete Blood Counts, blood chemistry profiles, blood glucose and serum fructosamine (to monitor diabetes), heartworm tests, fecal exams, urinalyses, etc. With our new equipment we can run three tests in house that we previously had to send out. All results are available in minutes to ensure the most efficient care for your pets. We still have the option to send any test we cannot process in-house to our outside lab, Antech Diagnostics.
